Anti-bullying week in secondary schools in Cape Town

Four years after the Quaker Peace Centre launched its anti-bullying campaign in the secondary schools in which it was working in Cape Town’s poorest townships, the Metropole South Education District (MSED) initiated its first anti-bullying week. QPC was asked to prepare a leaflet and toolkit based on its manual for schools My bully, my bra. These were circulated to all 200 schools in the district (163,000 pupils and 45,ooo teachers). During the week of 4th-8th May, education officials and QPC staff members visited 35 schools to engage with learners and raise awareness of the problem of bullying. Learners were encouraged to sign pledge posters and one school painted an anti-bullying pledge wall. The week culminated on 9th May, with an indaba (gathering) during which teachers, learners and officials from many of the schools involved shared their experiences.

The week was reported by two local newspapers, the Northern News and the Plainsman, both of which reprinted the Peace Centre’s list of 10 recommendations for tackling bullying and making schools less violent.

The MSED committed itself to continuing the awareness campaign during the coming year, supported by the staff of the Peace Centre, and to holding a second anti-bullying week in May 2016. In addition, there will be a poster and video clip competition for learners, with the winning poster and video clip sent to all schools.
